Lakewood Aberdeen Angus

Lakewood Aberdeen Angus

The Aberdeen Angus herd was established by Martin in 1996 with the purchase of 2 in-calf heifers from Rawburn.  Slowly over the years numbers have been increased to 22 breeding cows and followers.

Performance recording began in 2004 under Breedplan (previously - Signet), and over the last 5 years there have been vast improvements in management especially with regard to feeding, health status, biosecurity, and of course genetics and breeding efficiency.

The herd is a closed herd, and has high health status (SACS) - accredited for Johnes, vaccinated against BVD and Leptospirosis.

Herd sires past and present/AI include: Rawburn Transformer, Nightingale Panther, Princely U113 of Newcairnie, Elgar of the Moss, Dalrene Cruz, Lord Hi Spade, Rawburn Eric,

SAF 598  Bando 5175, Rawburn Elbar, Rawburn El Dorado B175, Wedderlie Netmark A281,  Rawburn Lord Ross C216 and Rawburn Evolution G691.

We now breed all our own heifer replacements with careful consideration of EBVs for AI or stock bulls chosen.  Replacements being selected for fertility, temperament and maternal traits - milk, gestation length and calving ease via high Self Replacing Indexes.

Our successes include: Lakewood Prince Maverick whose figures are truly staggering. His growth rate to 600 days was massive, with his Terminal Sire Index +49, and his Self Replacing Index +63.

He is in the top 1% of the top 1% of his breed.  His sire is the impressive Rawburn Lord Ross C216, and he combines muscle power with structural correctness.  He was purchased by Rawburn where he proceeded to be the all time high scanning bull in the Rawburn programme.  He is now owned by J&E Logan at Galawater (half semen rights retained by Rawburn), and he is to be used heavily in both herds.

The current stock bull is Rawburn Evolution on loan from John Elliot,  sired again  by       Rawburn Lord Ross C216 and is full brother to Rawburn Elysium.  His figures show he is a performance giant for growth rates and muscle.  His Terminal Sire Index being +41, and Self Replacing Index +49.   He has been with us for 2 years, and his 2009/2010 calves are outstanding.  We expect a great deal from many of them.

Lakewood Duke Arrazamatazz, a rising 2yr old son of Rawburn Evolution G691 out of Lakewood Duchess Avalon D014 was sold by Lakewood Partnership at Stirling Bull Sales recently for

13,000 gns. His indexes of TSI +39 and SRI +57, put him in the top 1% of his breed.  We hope he will do very well at his new home in Sutherland.

Calving has started at Lakewood, and we are already looking to which calves we will be taking to the National Calf Show in Carlise later in the year!!
